George W. Sweet, 87 of Rt. 214 died Monday October 15, 2018 at the Mountainside Care Center in Margaretville. A native and life long resident, he was born in Shandaken on April 3, 1931 son of the late George and Daisy Sweet. He was a heavy equipment operator for the NYS DOT for twenty-five years. George enjoyed camping and country music. He was dedicated to his family. George was a caretaker for properties, did lawn care and landscaping, and had a skill for tinkering with small equipment. He loved to help people, and was always giving a helping hand. He had been a life member of the MF Whitney Hose Co. in Phoenicia.
Surviving are his wife Eleanor Ostrander Sweet, son Joseph (Veronica), daughters: Peggy (Blair) Benjamin, Karen (Carl) Benjamin, Carol (Edwin) Benjamin, sister: Eva Quick, brother John Sweet, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Diane Benjamin in 2004, and siblings: Rita, Thelma, and Charlie.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of George will be held on Saturday at 10am at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia. Burial in the Shandaken Rural Cemetery. Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the MF Whitney Hose Co.
