Aaron Elting Van de Bogart III, 86, died August 4, 2024, at his cherished home on Aaron's Way in the Town of Woodstock. Born on July 13, 1938, on the serene Coldbrook Rd. in Woodstock, Aaron was the proud son of the late Aaron E. Van de Bogart Jr. and Helen Hill Van de Bogart. His roots ran deep in the Woodstock area, where he was born at home and remained a native and lifelong resident. Aaron's early education was at Onteora Central Schools. He was a man of the earth, finding his calling as a self-employed excavation contractor. For decades, Aaron's skilled hands and keen eye for detail made him a respected figure in the community. His work as a heavy equipment operator was more than a job; it was a testament to his hardworking nature and his commitment to excellence in every project he undertook.
Aaron's love for the outdoors was unparalleled. He was a life member of the Wittenberg Sportsman's Club, an organization close to his heart, as his father was a founding charter member. His passion for nature extended to his creation of a pond system where he raised trout, which were then used for stocking the Catskill Mountain streams, contributing to the preservation and enjoyment of the local environment. His interests were not confined to the land; Aaron was also a proud member of the Lake Hill Sport's Club that met at the Co#3 Fire House. Autumn was Aaron's favorite season, a time when he could be found hunting, fishing, hiking the trails, and trapping, fully immersing himself in the vibrant colors and crisp air that define the Woodstock landscape. Aaron's trustworthy nature made him a pillar in his community, someone who others could depend on without hesitation. Aaron's legacy is one of love, hard work, and a deep connection to the land and community of Woodstock.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle Ranvier Van de Bogart, a son, Gregory Van de Bogart, wife LeighAnn, grandson Colvin Van de Bogart. His daughter Melanie Ahouse, husband Joe, granddaughter Erin Santonja, husband Vinnie, great granddaughter Reagan Santonja. His sister Joan Foust of Florida, sister Linda Stoutenburgh, husband Bruce of Shokan, NY. Sister Laurel Watson, husband Danny of Alabama. A brother-in-law, Erik Stoutenburgh, of Bearsville, NY. A step-daughter Becky Bertorelli, husband Rico and grandchildren: Anthony & Michael Bertorelli. A step-daughter Shonda Vitarius, husband Tim Castillo and grandchildren: Sean Reilly, Brendan Reilly, Chris Reilly, Madden Reilly, Elsa Castillo & Timothy Castillo. Aaron's cousin and life long friend Brad Leonard and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive. Aaron was predeceased by his sister Donna Stoutenburgh of Bearsville and his nephew Scott Stoutenburgh of Bearsville. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he took great pride in sharing with them the beauty of the natural world he so cherished.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Aaron will be Tuesday August 27th at 5pm. Family and friends will gather from 4 to 5pm prior to the Memorial Sharing.
