Bart P. Gortel

Lanesville-

Bart Paul Gortel, 41 of Lanesville, died on December 16, 2024. He was born on April 10, 1983, in Queens, son of Danuta Zawadzka Gortel of Poland, and the late Pawel Gortel.  Having spent over three decades in the area, Bart was a proud graduate of Hunter-Tannersville School. Bart was a talented professional landscape engineer in Tannersville, where his skill and creativity brought beauty to the natural world. His work was not just a job but a passion, and his contributions to the local landscape will be enjoyed by the community for years to come.

Bart's love for sports was unparalleled. An ardent supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles, his favorite color was Eagles Green...naturally!  He was also a fervent fan of the NY Mets and the Chicago Bulls, and he had an impressive collection of jerseys and hats to show his team spirit. Bart carried his love for sports onto the field, playing league softball in Prattsville and embracing the thrill of competition.  When winter came, Bart could be found on the mountain, snowboard in hand, reveling in the rush of the crisp air and the freedom of the slopes. His love for the great outdoors was a testament to his adventurous spirit and his appreciation for the beauty of nature.

Off the field and away from the mountain, Bart was an avid reader of comic books and graphic novels, immersing himself in the worlds created by the written word. His musical tastes were eclectic, enjoying the beats of rap and the melodies of alternative rock music. Bart's talents extended to the kitchen, where he was a talented cook, a skill he honed growing up in a restaurant family business. His Philly cheesesteaks were legendary, a delicious tribute to his favorite football team.  Bart took great pride in maintaining the yard around his home, a reflection of his professional expertise and personal joy in cultivating beauty. His home was a welcoming space, filled with the love of his family and the presence of their beloved family dog, TILA, who had crossed the rainbow bridge ahead of him.  Bart's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and dedication. He was a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will be treasured.

Surviving in addition to his Mother are his wife Samantha Awand-Gortel of Lanesville, bonus sisters: Johanna Shonhert and Julia Lewis,  his nieces, Finley, Riley, Lina, and Marie, and his stepmother, Nancee Schreiber. 

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Bart will be held on Friday Dec. 20th at 8pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia with Fr. Tom Wilhelm as celebrant.  Private burial in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery in the Spring.  Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 7-8pm prior to the service.  The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort.  You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence with the family on Bart's Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com
