LANESVILLE - Beecher A. Smith, Jr., 87, of Rte. 214 died Thursday at his residence. Born March 19, 1937 in Phoenicia, he was the son of the late Beecher and Helen Winne Smith. A lifetime area resident, he owned and operated Beecher Smith & Son Sawmill. A logger and heavy equipment operator, he also partnered with Gene Gormley in the operation of Valley View Homes. A former Town Justice in Hunter, Beecher also belonged to the Stony Clove Rod and Gun Club, the Masonic Lodge and the HD Lane Fire Department.
Predeceased by his first wife, Arline in 2010, survivors include his wife, Marie Lane Rogers, two daughters: Lucinda (Preston) Woolheater of Lanesville and Brenda (Steve) Suda of CA. Two sons: Matthew of CO and Wade (Pierrette) Smith of Lanesville. A sister Sharon Wyatt of FL. Two step-daughters: Dina Roberts of UT and Cherene Watkin of AZ. Eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
His Funeral Service will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main St., Phoenicia. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Elka Park. Expressions of condolence may be shared with the family at GormleyFuneralHome.com.
