Woodstock-
Charlotte Cline, a loved mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, at the age of 96, in Woodstock. Born on July 16, 1929, in San Francisco, California, to Charles and Lily Contini, who predeceased her, Charlotte lived a full and vibrant life marked by her devotion for her family, her dedication to her community, and her love of travel.
Charlotte reminisced often on the joy she received in helping people. Having earned a Master of Social Work degree at San Jose State University, she began a career as a social worker and eventually served as a supervisor at the Sacramento Department of Social Services, where she touched the lives of countless individuals and families with her support and guidance. Her commitment to helping others extended well into her retirement, as she continued to offer her time and talents to CASA Sacramento, a community-based organization dedicated to serving Sacramento County’s foster children.
A long-time resident of California, Charlotte relocated 6 years ago to Woodstock to be closer to her beloved family. She was a loving mother to her daughters, Elizabeth (Thomas Ferrone) Cline, Tricia (Joseph Stubblefield) Cline, and Claudia Cline, and grandmother to Benjamin Cline. Charlotte also shared a special bond with her cousins, Bob (Geri Marshall Mohler) Fry, Nancy Fry, and Judy Fry-Cady, who will fondly remember her for her warmth and generosity.
Charlotte’s family remembers one of her strongest characteristics was her willingness to follow them into any new and different adventure — even those foreign to her — with total acceptance and enjoyment. She was always open to new experiences and offered warm acceptance of all of the new cast of characters introduced to her.
She created a beautiful garden at her house and enjoyed planting flowers. She was an avid reader and belonged to a book club. Her love of words shone through in her love for Scrabble, as she was an active member of a Scrabble social group, delighting in the challenge of the game and the camaraderie of her fellow players.
Travel was another of Charlotte's passions, and she often reminisced about her adventures abroad in Europe and England which included trips to Italy, England, France, Greece, Turkey, and Hungary. Even into her 90s, Charlotte remained active and engaged in painting and sculpture classes and volunteer work at a food pantry.
Two of her most recounted memories of her youth was when she and her girlfriends were arrested at 16 going to attend a Frank Sinatra concert past curfew. She said she was terrified of her father’s reaction to being called to the police station to bail out his daughter. When her father arrived, he was not angry with her but with the police for arresting her. She always thought of him as her hero after that. Her other favorite memory was the time she shook John F. Kennedy’s hand when he was campaigning for president.
Charlotte's life was a testament to the importance of family, and the joy of lifelong learning. Her memory will be treasured by all who knew her, and her influence will continue to be felt by those who were fortunate enough to have been part of her journey. Charlotte Cline's legacy is one of love, service, and loyalty, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were touched by her resilient spirit.
