Ernestine Smith Obituary

Kingston-

Ernestine Emma "Ernie" Smith, a beacon of warmth and love, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, in Kingston. Born on March 31, 1943, to the late Ernest and Emma Rider of Phoenicia, NY, Ernie's life was a tapestry of cherished moments and enduring relationships. She was predeceased by her siblings, Vernum, Reginald, Mary Ann, and Walter.  Her spirit is carried forward by her loving sisters: Geraldine and Pauline Rider Sammons.

Ernie's journey through life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family and friends. Known affectionately as Grandma Ernie, she was a matriarch in the truest sense, nurturing not only her own family but also anyone who had the privilege of crossing her path. Her son, William "Bill" Johnson, whom she adored, predeceased her, leaving a legacy of love and memories.

Grandma Ernie's heart was vast, encompassing her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom she showered with affection and pride. Her presence was a constant source of joy and comfort, and her stories, often shared with a twinkle in her eye, will be retold for generations. Ernie's commitment to her family knew no bounds; she traversed great distances to maintain the bonds she held so dear, ensuring that no matter the miles between them, they always felt her love and support.

Ernie's passion for life extended beyond her family. She was a friend to many, her kindness and generosity forging lasting connections that transcended the ordinary. To know Ernie was to experience true friendship, and her ability to make everyone feel like part of her extended family was one of her most remarkable gifts. Her creative spirit found expression in the beautiful hand-made crafts she lovingly created for those she cared about. These treasures, each imbued with her love and care, are cherished keepsakes that will continue to bring comfort and joy to her loved ones. Ernie's hands were rarely still, and her creative energy remained vibrant until her final days.  Grandma Ernie's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the enduring power of family. Her life was a testament to the belief that the love we give is the love that lasts, and her memory will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
