Eugene R. Conrad, known affectionately as Gene by his loved ones, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, in Big Indian. Born on March 26, 1935, in Queens, NY, Gene's vibrant spirit and infectious laughter left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His life was a testament to the love and laughter he shared with his family and friends.

Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Carol Hennessey Conrad, whom he married in 1958. Together they built a life filled with joy and cherished memories. He was a loving father to his daughters Theresa Giuliano of FL, Eugenia and husband Fred Holland of FL, his son Erik Conrad of Big Indian, and his bonus daughter Terri Borgailio.  Gene's legacy continues through his grandchildren  Victoria, Jessie, Keri, Fred Jr, Michael, Nick, and his adored great-grandchildren Tehya, Ayva, Leyla, Ella, Lincoln, Priya, Isla, Krew, Rebel, Logan, and Amelia.

Predeceased by his parents, Henry and Frances Jacob Conrad, his daughter Victoria Conrad Morra, great-grandson Carson, and his siblings Henry, Dorothy, Madeline, and Gloria.  He was predeceased by his sister Alice Bellomo just hours of his own transition.. Gene leaves behind a family who revered him as the cornerstone of their lives.

Gene's early years were marked by his athletic prowess; he was a formidable presence in the boxing ring at the YMCA and on the football field. His team's three-year undefeated streak earned him the nickname "Legs". His love for animals shone through his hobby of raising various species of pigeons.

Professionally, Gene was a man of many talents. He began his career as a commercial artist in the 1950s before showcasing his skills as a plumber and construction technician. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become a successful hospitality, manger of the AMC hiking club, chef, and restaurateur. Gene served his country with honor in the US Army, where he was a distinguished sniper receiving his qualification badges of Marksman, Sharpshooter, and then Expert, with his beloved M1 Grand, and alpine skied in the Bavarian Alps of Germany, in the Army's 10th Mountain Division. His commitment to service continued with his involvement in the Phoenicia American Legion Post #950.

An avid Yankee fan, Gene was the go-to source for baseball trivia and history. His family  affectionately called him "Duke," a nod to his love for John Wayne and Hank Williams. Gene's sense of humor and knack for being a joke machine , and storytelling well playing the harmonica made him the life of every gathering. His love for children was evident in every interaction, and he took great joy in breeding the German Shepherd Dog, and tending to his vegetable garden. Gene's walks, camping trips, and the warm hospitality he extended to friends and family showcased his role as the quintessential patriarch.

Gene Conrad was an intelligent man who could be both focused and tenderly tough when the situation called for it. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.  A gathering to remember will be held privately.  The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Phoenicia American Legion Post #950, or the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at www.themiamiproject.org  You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence with the family on Gene's Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com  Mark Wilsey is privileged to honor and serve the Conrad Family at the E.
