Frederick J. Cifello, known affectionately as Fred to his friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 20, 2025, at the age of 91 in Hyde Park. Born on May 15, 1933, in Troy, NY, Fred was a man of honor, integrity, and warmth, whose presence enriched the lives of those around him.
Fred's early years in Troy were the foundation of a life characterized by dedication and service. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy, where he was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, an honor that spoke to his commitment and bravery. After his military service, Fred embarked on a distinguished career in the banking industry, starting as a bank teller at Manufacturer's National Bank in the 1950s. His exceptional work ethic and leadership skills led him to retire as the Vice President of a local banking institution, leaving a legacy of helping countless individuals and families with their financial needs.
A resident of the area since 1969, Fred's influence extended beyond his professional life. He was a man of many talents, including playing the piano and organ. His musical gifts were often showcased at social events and parties, where he brought joy and entertainment to many. In addition to his musical abilities, Fred was also a skilled leather craftsman and woodworker, hobbies that reflected his meticulous attention to detail and creativity.
Fred's love for sports was evident in his youth when he played baseball in a local amateur league. This passion for athletics was a thread throughout his life, and he enjoyed sharing stories of his days on the diamond. In his leisure time, Fred was an avid reader, particularly of westerns and mysteries, and he could often be found engrossed in the pages of a book that transported him to another time and place.
Travel was another joy for Fred, with Myrtle Beach being a favored vacation destination. He cherished these moments of relaxation and exploration, creating lasting memories with his loved ones. Additionally, Fred had a passion for model airplanes, assembling an impressive collection that he proudly displayed in his home, each piece a testament to his patience and precision.
Fred was a beloved family man, deeply devoted to his wife of 71 years, Margery Cifello. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. He was a guiding light to his daughter, Cheryl (Scott) Mathieu of Hudson, and his son, Michael Cifello of Boiceville. His granddaughter Leah Cifello brought him immense pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with her. Fred is also survived by his brother, Richard Cifello, and several nieces and nephews who will fondly remember their uncle's kindness and wisdom. He was predeceased by his brother Anthony and his parents, Anthony and Ruth Cifello, who instilled in him the values of family and hard work.
Fred's life was a tapestry of service, family, and community. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. As we say goodbye to Frederick J. Cifello, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that truly made a difference. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love he gave so freely. Rest in peace.
