H. Sheldon Boice

Harold Sheldon Boice Sr., known affectionately as Sheldon, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, at the age of 90 in Lake Katrine. Born on April 21, 1934, in Kingston, Sheldon was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who lived a full and meaningful life.

Sheldon graduated from Kingston High School in the Class of '53.  His commitment to his country was evident through his honorable service in the US Army, which began in Ft. Devens, MA. Following his military service, Sheldon continued to serve his community as a member of the American Legion Post 1627 in Shokan and as a member of the National Guard.

Professionally, Sheldon dedicated 39 years to IBM, starting as a tool and die maker at the Kingston plant. When his department was transferred, he seamlessly transitioned to the records department, eventually retiring as Supervisor of Records. His work ethic and dedication to his role were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sheldon was deeply involved in his community. For over forty years, he volunteered as a Board Member and Past President of the Mt. Pleasant Rural Cemetery. His efforts in organizing records and maps were invaluable, and he assisted countless families in locating their loved ones. His extensive knowledge of the cemetery's ancestry was a testament to his dedication. Sheldon also served the Tongore Cemetery many years prior, contributing his time and expertise.  He was a book of knowledge in the history of Ulster county and loved to share stories of the past.

Sheldon's passion for teaching led him to instruct a Machine Shop Class for BOCES, sharing his skills and knowledge with the next generation. His love for mechanics extended to his personal life, where he maintained a farm complete with all the necessary  equipment and barns. Sheldon was always ready to lend a hand, whether it was snow plowing the driveways of neighbors with his tractor or assisting friends with any problem they faced. He loved his family and together with his son tackled many projects teaching and guiding as he went along passing down the knowledge and experiences he gained in life. Most retire to relax but Sheldon's new chapter in life was to work outdoors spending countless hours on his tractor, mowing, haying, tilling and fufilling many other requests from around the community.

Travel was another joy for Sheldon and his wife, Helen. Together, they explored the United States and various countries abroad.  Later many family vacations up and down the east coast created a lifetime of memories. At home, Sheldon was never idle, always engaged in a project in his garage. He spent many hours figuring and building functional tools and equipment from scrap metals.  He had a knack for taking what most would consider junk and turn it into something new that had whole new purpose.  His kind and hardworking nature was evident in everything he did, and he was known for his thoughtful approach to decision-making.

Sheldon is survived by his loving wife, Helen Boice, and his son, Harold (Catherine) Boice Jr. He was a cherished grandfather to Harrison, Eva, and Ellie. His life was a beacon of selflessness, gentleness, and handiness, qualities that he embodied every day. Sheldon's legacy is one of unwavering kindness and a willingness to help others, traits that endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Alvina Boice, Sheldon's memory will be held dear in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his generous spirit.

Sheldon's life was a testament to the impact one person can have on their community and the lives of others. He will be deeply missed but remembered fondly for his gentle soul and the selfless love he shared with so many.  A Service to Celebrate the Life of Sheldon will be held on Saturday April 19th at 12 noon at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia.  Burial in the family plot at the Mt.
