Helen (Duryea) Sebald

Helen J. Sebald, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love and strength, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, in Phoenicia, at the venerable age of 93. Born on May 3, 1931, in Oceanside, Long Island, Helen was the beloved daughter of the late Harold and Helen Egger Duryea. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, unconditional love, and unwavering dedication to family.

A long-time resident of Phoenicia, Helen was the heart and soul of the Phoenicia Motor Lodge, which she owned and operated for decades alongside her late husband, Elly Sebald. Her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to hospitality made the cabins a warm and welcoming place for all who passed through its doors. Helen's love for her community extended beyond her business as she was an active member of the Phoenicia United Methodist Church, where her generous spirit touched many lives.

Helen's culinary skills were legendary among family and friends. Known for her apple pie, famous cheesecake, and sought-after coleslaw recipe, she found joy in cooking and baking, often sharing her creations with those around her. Her skilled hands were also adept at handcrafts, sewing and crocheting blankets for all the children in her life, ensuring they felt the warmth of her love.

As the family matriarch, Helen was a very caring woman with the heart of an angel. She was always placing others before herself and worrying about the well-being of those she loved. Her concern for others extended to animals, which were a constant part of the Sebald/Duryea family, having cooking for her dog Buddy everyday.

Helen's wisdom was evident in her diligent approach to life, always staying on budget and living within their means. She instilled these values in her children and grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of prudence and responsibility.

She is survived by her son, Thomas (Mary) Sebald of Shandaken, and her daughter, Janet Levinson of Kingston. Helen was the proud grandmother to four grandchildren: Jaimy, Katy, Thomas, and Matthew, and three great-grandchildren: Charly, Maeve, and Thomas Jr. And a proud Aunt to her beloved nephew John / Babette and great nieces Jacqueline/ Dominique/Pearl. She was predeceased by her husband Elwyn Sebald in 2006.  Known affectionately as "Nanny" to all, Helen's love and guidance were the cornerstones of her family.

Helen's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her memory will continue to inspire and guide us. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, care, and an unwavering commitment to her loved ones. Helen J. Sebald will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Helen will be held on Saturday at 11am at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia with the Rev. Ralph Merante as celebrant.  Burial in the family plot at the Hudler Cemetery, Mt. Ttremper.  Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm at the E. B.
