Henry “Otto” Bernstein Jr., 76, of Phoenicia, passed away on July 4, 2026, following sudden medical complications. Born on June 22, 1950, in Kingston, son of the late Henry and Vivien Wolfersteig Bernstein.  He was a lifelong resident of Phoenicia and was known throughout the community simply as “Otto.”

A Christian man of steady faith and quiet strength, Otto lived a life marked by hard work, generosity, and deep local roots. He attended Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, and carried the values of discipline, perseverance, and service with him throughout his life. For more than 50 years, he worked as a self-employed, highly skilled stonemason through Catskill Mountain Stoneworks, where his craftsmanship became part of the landscape of countless homes and properties. His handiwork will serve as a lasting legacy for many homes, and those who knew his work understood the care and pride he brought to every project.

Otto was a true son of the Catskills, and he found joy in the rhythms of the seasons and the traditions of the region he loved. He especially enjoyed the spring ritual of boiling sap in the Sugar Shack to make delicious homemade maple syrup. He loved and valued learning history, was an avid reader, and enjoyed constructing models with patience and precision. He also had a keen eye for darts and enjoyed friendly competition in horseshoes, as well as playing softball on local teams. His interests reflected a man who appreciated both fellowship and the simple pleasures of a life well lived.

He was also deeply connected to the outdoors. He  earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1968.  An Eagle Scout is the highest and most prestigious rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program.  Only about 4% of all Scouts achieve this distinction, which requires earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating exceptional leadership, character, and community service.  Otto enjoyed birding and most everything outdoors, and he maintained a home weather station, always attentive to the changing skies and seasons around him. He loved bluegrass music at Shinhopple and took great pride in his involvement with the Catskill Mountain Railroad, as well as model railroading. These passions brought him lasting enjoyment and connected him with friends and neighbors who shared his enthusiasm.

Otto was a former member of the M. F. Whitney Hose Co.,a role that reflected his commitment to the place he called home. He was respected for his service, his reliability, and his willingness to help wherever he was needed. To many, he was not only a skilled craftsman and community member, but also a true friend whose presence could be counted on in times of need and in moments of celebration alike.

He is survived by his son, Henry III, and his wife, Antonia Bernstein; his grandson, Henry Bernstein IV; his sister, Virginia “Ginger” Bernstein; his brother, Vincent, and his wife, Susan Bernstein; his nephews, Travis and Ethan; his nieces, Heather and Katlyn; and his companion, Catherine O’Dell. He will be remembered with love by his family and by many friends and neighbors whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and steadfast nature.

Henry “Otto” Bernstein Jr. will be remembered as a hardworking man, a loyal friend, and a proud Phoenicia native whose life reflected dedication to family, community, and craft. His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew him, and his legacy will endure in the homes he built, the organizations he served, and the many lives he touched along the way.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 am at the St. Francis de Sales Church with Fr. Tom Wilhelm as celebrant.  Burial in the family plot at the St. Francis de Sales Cemetery Rt. 28 Shandaken. Friends will be received on Thursday from 4pm to 6pm at the E. B.
