Woodstock-
Herbert "Erhard" Krein, age 81, of Woodstock, NY, passed away on January 27, 2022. Herb was born in Odessa, Ukraine on October 21, 1940. His family emigrated from Germany to the United States when Herb was 11 years old. After graduating from Onteora High School, Herb served in the United States army, including a tour in Vietnam, before his honorary discharge in 1971. On January 4, 1971 Herb became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Herb was a devoted father to his two children, Darren and Michelle, from his marriage to Gail (Tonnesen) Krein-Clearwater. Herb gained an extended family of children and grandchildren through his enduring companionship with Marion Ostrander.
Herb was a valuable employee for several companies in the Hudson Valley, including Ferroxcube, FX Systems, QDP Electronics and Rotron. Herb was a natural athlete. He was a star basketball player in high school, enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer his entire life. He loved spending his free time outdoors on a golf course, hiking up a mountain, working in the yard or fishing at the Ashokan reservoir. A proud, humble man of strong faith, Herb was involved in the leadership at High Woods Reformed Church for many years. Herb was a quiet, patient man who showed kindness to everyone. He was a faithful partner, a loving father and the best Opa to his grandchildren. His presence was a blessing in the lives of those who knew him and he will be missed beyond measure. Preceding Herb in death were his parents John & Pauline Krein, brother Otto Krein, and his son Darren Krein.
Herb is survived by his devoted life partner Marion Ostrander of Woodstock, NY; daughter Michelle (Krein) Burleson and husband Boyd Burleson of Abilene, TX; grandchildren Jared Burleson and Kelsie Burleson of Abilene, TX; brother Walter Krein and wife Karen of Naples, FL; brother Wilfred Krein and companion Evie Bennett of Glenford, NY; sister Valentina Stelcen of West Hurley, NY; several nieces and nephews; Marion Ostrander's extended family, and his faithful cat Sammie.
