Herminio "Herman" Rivera

Herminio "Herman" Rivera, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2025, in Olivebridge. Born on August 24, 1942, in Brooklyn to the late Amadeo and Julia Sanchez Rivera, Herman's zest for life and his ability to fix anything with a motor became the hallmark of his 82 years.

Herman was the beloved life partner of Kathleen Ruiz for 30 years. His love and legacy continue through his children, Marie Rivera Vondrasek  (Kevin), Carolyn Rivera Bell (Kieran), and Sean Rivera (Sofia). A doting grandfather, he reveled in the joys of his grandchildren, Taylor and Cristin Vondrasek , Lindsey and Kevin Baker, Dakotah Vondrasek, Andrew, Alexandra and Nicholas Rivera.   His great-grandchildren, Gavin, Landon, Easton, Callen, Remi, and Teddi, also brought him immense pride and happiness. Herman is survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Mary Rivera, who remained a significant part of his life.

A master mechanic, Herman was known for his unparalleled skill with automobiles. His expertise made him the go-to person for car advice and troubleshooting in his community. Herman respected the beauty of nature and enjoyed bird-watching in his beautiful yard. He was an avid outdoorsman who cherished the camaraderie of hunting and fishing with friends and looked forward to his annual hunting weekend with his son Sean & close friends. Herman's love for the outdoors was matched by his commitment to conservation and sportsmanship, as evidenced by his active involvement in the Wittenberg Sportsman Club. There, he was instrumental in constructing the Pavilion by the Pond, a testament to his dedication and skill. He was also a proud member of the Morgan Hill Sportsman Club.

Herman's wardrobe often featured his favorite camouflage, a nod to his love for the outdoors. His hands were skilled not only in mechanics but also in carpentry, a talent he applied to countless projects. His love for adventure took him on many travels, from the familiar landscapes of Puerto Rico to the educational streets of Cuba, and recent trips to visit family in Ireland and Greece.

In his younger days, Herman was an amateur boxer, a sport that taught him the values of discipline and resilience. These lessons served him well throughout his life and were passed down to his children and grandchildren. His stories of the ring were as captivating as his tales of the great outdoors.

Herman's presence was a source of strength and wisdom for those who knew him. He was a sounding board for friends and neighbors, always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand. His ability to listen and advise was as much a part of his legacy as his mechanical and outdoor skills. Lastly, Herman had a lifelong love for music, boating, motorcycles & antique cars, entering his beloved Brooklyn rat rod in several local car shows. 

A resident of the area for sixty years, Herman's impact on the community was profound. His life was one of service, friendship, and love for the natural world. He will be remembered for his quick wit, infamous storytelling and overall zest for life. 

Herman Rivera lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit lives on through the beautiful memories he created with his family and friends. Herman's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the gentle reminder to appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

Friends will be received for the memorial visitation on Easter Sunday from 3pm to 6pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Francis de Sales Church Main St. Phoenicia on Monday April 21, 2025 at 11am.  Burial in the Krumville Cemetery.  You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence with the family on his Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com  Arrangements under the direction of the E.
