James A. Short, known affectionately to friends and family as Jim, passed away on February 7, 2025, in Kingston. Born on September 24, 1934, in Phoenicia, Jim was the son of the late Arthur and Thelma Evans Short. His life was a testament to service, commitment, and the enduring strength of family and community ties.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Henrietta Grant Short, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2013. He also bore the tragic loss of his son Timothy and grandchildren April and Jimmy, who were taken too soon in an automobile accident in 1994. His sister, Nancy Spiak, also preceded him in death. Jim's legacy continues through his granddaughter, Heather Short Craig, her husband Kristofer of Mt. Tremper, and his great-granddaughters, Laura and Sarah Craig, who carry forward the family's warmth and spirit.
A patriot at heart, Jim honorably served his country in the United States Army until his discharge in 1956. His service was recognized with several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star. His dedication to his nation did not end with his military service; he continued to serve for 18 years with the New York State National Guard, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant and playing a crucial role in communications for the 156 Field Artillery of Kingston and the 10th Mountain Division in Watertown.
Jim's commitment to his community was unwavering. He was a respected member of the Phoenicia American Legion Post #950 and the Shandaken VFW Post #2837. His entrepreneurial spirit shone as the owner and distributor of the Phoenicia Dairy for 20 years, a business he successfully managed until 1971. Jim also served as a dedicated member of the Shandaken Police Department for 15 years and was the first appointed full-time ambulance attendant alongside Karl Bush.
His service extended to numerous community organizations, including a 17-year membership with the MF Whitney Hose Co. of Phoenicia and active participation in the Phoenicia United Methodist Church. Jim's professional life was diverse and impactful; he worked for the New York City Board of Water Supply as a chemical analyst from 1969 to 1994 and shared his love for the community as a school bus driver for Bucky Avery for 20 years.
Jim's life was one of meaningful connections and steadfast service. His presence was a cornerstone in the lives of those who knew him, and his contributions to his country, his community, and his family are indelible. Though he has passed, the memories of his kindness, his laughter, and his unwavering sense of duty will continue to inspire and comfort all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday Feb. 16 at 1pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia. The family will receive friends after the ceremony until 3pm at the Gormley Funeral Home. Spring burial will take place at the family plot at the Mt. Pleasant Rural Cemetery.
