Bushnellsville-
Jane M. Rossitz, a beacon of warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, in Bushnellsville, having been born in West Hempstead on July 25, 1930, to the late George and Louise Schroeher Bedell. Jane, affectionately known as "Grandma" to her cherished grandchildren, lived a life marked by love, service, and the joy of sharing her many talents with those around her.
Surviving Jane are her devoted sons, Jeff (Melisa) Rossitz of Rochester, and Jay (Linda) Rossitz of Charleston, South Carolina. Her legacy continues to flourish through her five grandchildren: Meghan ( Craig ), Amanda ( Michael ), Vanessa ( Michael ), Stephanie ( Matthew ), and Lisa ( Robert ), as well as her seven great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her later years. Jane was a beloved aunt to her nephews Mark ( Karen ) and Craig ( Beth ) Bedell. She was predeceased by her loving husband, John Rossitz, in 2021, and her son John "Jody" Rossitz in 2018, both of whom she missed dearly.
For approximately twenty years, Jane served as a cherished Teacher's Aide at the Onteora High School, where she supported Special Needs classrooms with her gentle guidance and unwavering dedication. Jane's equestrian talents shone bright in her youth as she shared an affinity with horses, a passion that remained close to her heart throughout her life. As a longtime resident of the Catskills, she was an integral part of the community, serving as a member of the Big Indian-Oliverea Fire Department and as a charter and lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Big Indian-Oliverea Fire Department for 55 years. In these roles, she held positions as Past President and Past Vice-President, and fire department photographer, volunteering countless hours to the betterment of the department and the safety of her peers.
Her community involvement extended to politics, where she was an active member of the Shandaken Republican Club. Jane, alongside her husband John, were named as Hamlet Hero’s in 2007 for their contributions to the community. Furthermore, she was an integral part of the Big Indian beautification committee, helping to enhance the natural charm of her beloved hamlet.
Jane's artistic talents were widespread and recognized by many. A master baker, she was renowned in the Catskill Mountains for her exquisite cakes, whether they be specialty, wedding, or birthday cakes. Her skilled hands were also adept at crafts and sewing, creating beauty in every stitch. Her reputation as a fine artist extended to her hand calligraphy, which graced many an invitation and certificate.
Not only did Jane's green thumb bring life to her flower garden, but it also contributed to the beauty of her neighborhood, where she was known as a dependable and caring neighbor. Her kindness, generosity, and the ability to be counted on in times of need made her a cornerstone of her community.
Jane's presence was a gift to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed. Her spirit, embodied in her dedication to family and community, will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. Jane M.
