Janet Shultis Obituary

Bearsville-

Janet Shultis, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, Lake Katrine. Born on August 29, 1938, in Boomer, West Virginia, to the late Matterson and Margaret Nutter Crow, Janet grew up with a strong sense of community and faith that would guide her throughout her life.  Janet was the beloved wife of Vernon Shultis, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and dedication. Together, they built a family that included their son, Jeffrey, his wife Karen, and their children, Jason, his wife Jessica, and granddaughter Stella. Janet's family was the cornerstone of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She was also a dear sister-in-law to Irene DeGraff, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Predeceased by her sisters Alma Rice, Juanita Cottrell, and Margaret Rhodes, Janet's memory will continue to be honored by her loved ones.

A devout Christian, Janet was formerly active in the Overlook Methodist Church, where she found great solace and purpose. Her faith was an integral part of who she was, and it inspired her to serve others with kindness and compassion.  Janet's commitment to her community was evident through her tireless volunteer work with the Woodstock Co. #2 Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Her efforts not only supported the department but also strengthened the bonds within her community. She was a passionate gardener, taking pride in the beauty she cultivated around her home. The landscapes she created were a testament to her love for nature and her green thumb.

Known for her caring spirit, Janet was a long-time caregiver who provided comfort and assistance to those in need. Her generosity and willingness to help others were hallmarks of her character and left a lasting impact on everyone she met.  In addition to her nurturing nature, Janet was a skilled baker whose apple cake and Texas sheet cake were often requested and always enjoyed by friends and family alike. Her culinary talents brought joy to many gatherings and will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of tasting her creations.  A Service to Celebrate the Life of Janet will be Tuesday at 10 am at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia with the Rev. Ralph Merante officiating.  Burial in the Woodstock Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Monday from 3pm to 7pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home.  You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence with the family on Janet's Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com
