Jean M. McCann, 78, (lovingly known as Grandma to many) of Fleischmanns passed peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, February 18, 2022 at her home while surrounded by her loving children. She was born April 13, 1943 in Halcott Center daughter of the late Charles and Helen Grant Ballard.  She raised her family and resided in Fleischmanns for the majority of her life.  She had a strong work ethic and most recently enjoyed a 23 year long career as a Kitchen Supervisor at Belleayre Ski Center.  She had an even stronger sense of family and community.  Jean was extremely generous, she contributed to community fundraisers, Toys for Tots, gifted two dollar bills to those she was fond of, and brought countless smiles to neighboring children’s faces with her abundant candy bags on Halloween.  Above all else, Jean was the family matriarch. She loved her family fiercely and always looked forward to hosting family gatherings, which included Saturday night dinners, holidays, and bringing her family together for an annual apple picking tradition.  She had a reputation for comforting hugs, delicious cooking and baking.  Her mac’n cheese was renowned by family, friends and the community at large. Her pumpkin bread and rolls were a "must have" at family gatherings and celebrations.  She enjoyed camping with the family, and later in life, despite a life long fear of flying, she traveled to Ireland, Texas and Barbados.  She is remembered as genuine, strong, generous and above all, loving.
It brings great comfort to those that love Jean, to know that in her passing she has been reunited with her predeceased husband of 55 years, Mike McCann Sr.; together the two created and leave behind a legacy of the following surviving family: children - Daniel (Lynn) Nies of Cuba, NY, Donald (Kelly) Nies of Bradford, PA, Tina Wilkens (partner-Manny Castillo) of Arkville, Michelle (David) Henkel of Saugerties, Marion/Buffy (Floyd) Knapp of Margaretville, Mindy (Gregg) Passarelli of Margaretville, Michael (Billie) McCann Jr. of Saratoga Springs, and Bobbie Jean (Bobbie Jo) Showens of Margaretville.  Twenty-one grandchildren, and twenty-five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her four-legged companions: Mitzi, Snuggles, and Peppi.
She was predeceased by infant  daughter Margaret Helen McCann, son-in-law Erich Wilkens Jr., great granddaughter Amelia, and siblings: Pete Ballard, Robert Ballard, Norma Hughson, Mildred McMullen, Audrey Fields, Harriet and Doris Lucas.
