Shokan-
Joan E. Berger, a cherished pillar of the Olivebridge community and a beacon of warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on February 15, 1938, in Kingston, Joan lived a life rich with love, service, and the joy of simple pleasures.
A proud lifelong Town of Olive resident, Joan's early years were spent on the Trowbridge Family dairy farm, where she not only learned the value of hard work but also discovered her lifelong love for driving when she learned to operate a manual transmission vehicle at the tender age of 13 while haying fields with her father. Her pride in her Olivebridge heritage was profound, and she carried that sense of belonging and responsibility throughout her life. After marrying her soulmate Paul Berger, she moved across the reservoir to Shokan where they built their home and would raise their family.
For over two decades, Joan served her community as a rural mail carrier in Olivebridge, a role in which she became an honorary member of many families along her route. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her pride for the Olive Fire Department, an organization her family helped support by providing their first fire truck. Joan's involvement in her community was a testament to her belief in the power of service and the importance of giving back.
Joan's love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul, in 2011, and her parents, Howard and Kathryn (Leininger) Trowbridge. She is survived by her devoted children, daughter Janelle (Fred) Perry of Shokan, and son Alan (Lisa) Berger of Bedford, NH. Joan's legacy continues through her three adoring grandchildren, Becca, Ryne, and Katie, and her newborn great-grandson, Lucas, who all brought her immense joy.
A proud Onteora Indian alumna, Joan was part of the first graduating class to complete grades 9 through 12. She remained engaged with her alma mater, first by working at the school, then by participating in reunion committees and the cherished "Golden Walk," where alumni joined the current graduating class in their procession. Her passion for local history and education was a driving force in her community involvement.
Joan's creative spirit shone through her handcrafted knitted and crocheted items, and her Boston Baked Beans were legendary. A self-taught musician, she found solace and joy in the melodies she played on the piano and accordion. In her earlier years she enjoyed bowling in local leagues. Her favorite travel destination, Bermuda, was a place where she found peace and relaxation with her husband.
Joan's life was a tapestry of commitment to her community, love for her family, and a celebration of the simple joys in life. Her memory will be cherished and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched. Joan’s life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived and the impact one person can have on so many. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit will forever be a guiding light for her family and the Olivebridge community.
