John Molloy Obituary

West Shokan-

John “Jack” Molloy, 91, formerly of West Shokan, NY, passed away August 21, 2021, in Westminster, Maryland.

He was born May 17, 1930, in the Bronx, New York, the only son of the late John and Joan Molloy. He lived in West Shokan, NY during the summers as a child where he met his future wife and moved to the town full time in 1953.  On June 6, 1953, he married Patricia Molloy (Purfield), who preceded him in death in 2003.

He is survived by his five children: Mary Pat Gale (Dennis) of Kremmling, Colorado, Christopher (Kathleen) of Denver, Colorado, Kevin (Cathleen) of Parker, Colorado, Terence (Carole) of Westminster, Maryland and Megan Johnson (Christopher) of Ringwood, New Jersey. Grandchildren: Brendan, Matthew, Cameron, Jordan, David, Ryan, Benjamin, Daniel, and Michaela. Great Grandchildren: Jonathan, Hannah, Jack, Colin, Ava, Sean, Natalia, and Cooper and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom were near and dear to him.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he was employed by The Kingston Trust Company before transitioning to his long-time career as the Assessor for the Town of Olive where he served on the Executive Board of the N.Y. State Assessors’ Association. Following his retirement in 1995, he particularly enjoyed golf and the NY Mets’ spring training in Port St Lucie, Florida.

He truly valued volunteering his time to the community including roles as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St Augustine’s Chapel, as a lifetime member of Olive Fire Department Company #3, as a member of Olive Post #1627 of the American Legion, as leader in the Knights of Columbus and as the Republican chairmen for the Town of Olive for several years.

John was a 44-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous where he remained active in the program until he passed. He was proud to have sponsored many new members over the years and was considered a particularly wise and strong support for his sponsees. He often spoke about how AA was an important framework for his life’s success and was dedicated to ensuring those in need have ready access to the program.

A funeral mass/service will be held at 11am Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at St Augustine’s Chapel in West Shokan, NY. Due to Covid precautions, the family will receive friends and relatives from 10am-11am on the patio in front of the chapel. A burial at the family plot in St Francis DeSales Cemetery, Rt. 28 Allaben, NY will directly follow. Due to CDC guidelines, the Molloy Family reminds those attending, masks are required.  The family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Olive Free Library, PO Box 59, West Shokan, NY 12494.
