John M Sylak

     John M Sylak, 85, of Rt. 42 died Friday September 17, 2021 at his residence with his family by him.  An area resident for over 30 years, he formerly made his home on Long Island. John was a school bus driver and mechanic for the Middle Country School District in Selena, NY.  John had a profound sense of community. He was a 25+ year member of the Centerreach Fire Department, and had served as a past lieutenant.  He appreciated the beauty of nature, enjoyed the outdoors, and was a steward of the environment with his daily trips to check on his favorite spots. John was the patriarch of his family, and he was one of the most giving individuals. He valued the family gatherings and barbecues. He enjoyed traveling the United States, and Alaska in particular. He shared whatever he had, to help others. 

     Surviving are his daughters: Catherine Sylak-Oddo and Connie Sylak.  A son Michael (Amy) Sylak, grandchildren Christine, Gary, Amanda, and John.  5 great grandchildren also surviving. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Sylak in 2019, and son Mark in 2010.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Tom Kiely, on Monday September 20, 2021 at 11 am at the St Francis de Sales Church Main Street Phoenicia.
