Joseph Murray Obituary

Woodland Valley-

Joseph Murray, 87, died peacefully on July 3, 2024, at the age of 87 at his son's home in Hopewell Junction. Born on August 29, 1936, in Yonkers, Joseph was the son of the late Edward and Anne Debroki Murray. His life was a testament to the strength of family, and the joy of nature.

Joseph's legacy is carried on through his loving children: Joseph (Jackie) Murray, Alan (Karyn) Murray, Deborah (Rob) Lee, and Kayleen (Andrea) Scali, a sister: Geraldine ( Tony) Deruggiero, as well as his 12 grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as Papa Murray. The Catskill Mountains, or "Papa Murray's Mountains" as they were lovingly referred to by his grandchildren, held a special place in his heart.

Dedicated to his community, Joseph served with distinction as a Deputy at the Ulster County Sheriff's Department's Shandaken Substation. He also took pride in his role as a groundskeeper at the Onteora Central Schools for over two decades. Joseph's work ethic was further exemplified by his time as a NYS licensed building superintendent. Always striving to provide for his family, he often held two jobs, including positions at Kirk's Market and the Boiceville Sunoco Station.

Joseph's interests were as rich and varied as the life he led. An avid fisherman, he found serenity at the water's edge. Winter brought him joy as he watched birds flock to the feeder he meticulously maintained. With a green thumb, Joseph cultivated his vegetable gardens, sharing the harvest with family and friends. A lifelong New York Yankees fan, he also enjoyed watching boxing, following the careers of athletes like Judge and Tyson.

Beyond his love for sports, Joseph was a talented artist. Using watercolors and acrylic paints, he captured the essence of the Catskill Mountains and the surrounding areas. His landscapes were more than just art; they were expressions of his deep connection to the land he called home. His home in Woodland Valley was a source of great pride, and it was there that he shared his gift of humor and music, playing the harmonica and blowing his "Yankees' Horn" to bid farewell to visiting loved ones.

Joseph's marriage to his beloved wife, Sandra, was a true love story. The couple's bond was unbreakable, and Joseph's heart was deeply affected by Sandra's passing on June 30, 2024, just days before his own. Their love and companionship were the bedrock of their family, and the memories they created together will be cherished forever.

Joseph's warmth, humor, and generosity of spirit touched all who knew him. He had a remarkable ability to make each person feel valued, and his laughter was a gift that brightened every room. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Joseph's memory will live on in the stories told, the art he created, and the echoes of his harmonica and horn in the hills of Woodland Valley.
