Joseph Stein, 89, of Boiceville died Tuesday July 11, 2023 at The Eleanor Rehabilitation Center in Hyde Park. He was born February 14, 1934 in Manhattan, son of the late Joseph and Ann Cummings Stein. An area resident since 1981, he was a thirty-five year veteran of the U S Army and he and his wife Bev made their home at various military posts. He was a W4 Motor Pool Service Technician who had been awarded a Bronze Star, and had served in Germany, two tours in Vietnam, and many US locations. He retired in 1990from the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. He was a Past Commander of Shokan Post 1627 American Legion, as well as the V.F.W. Joe was detail oriented, and was skilled at fabricating solutions for all sorts of issues. He was a fun and loving man, and his family was paramount to him.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years this September, Beverly Bowman Stein, 2 sons: Joseph Eric Stein of R.I. and Gregory Scott Stein of CA. A brother: Peter J. Stein of SC, granddaughter: Charlotte Kay Stein, niece: Amy Kay Stein, and his four-legged companion Winston. He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Stein.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Joseph will be held on Saturday at 1pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia. Friends will be received on Saturday from 10am to 1pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Shokan Post 1627 American Legion Box 286, Shokan 12481.
