Mt. Tremper-
Joseph “Joey” Tabler, age 65, of Mt Tremper, passed away on May 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Kingston on December 16, 1960, Joey was a lifelong area resident who spent his life rooted in the community he called home. He attended Onteora Central Schools and carried with him throughout his life the values of hard work, loyalty, and a deep appreciation for the people and places that shaped him. Those who knew him will remember his strong spirit, his easy familiarity.
Joey was a skilled body man and took great pride in his work. Most recently, he served at Romeo Ford in Kingston as an automobile collision repair technician, where his talent and dedication were well known and respected. His love of auto body restoration was sparked by Ole Sjursen, and that early influence helped shape a career in which he found both purpose and satisfaction. He approached his work with care and craftsmanship, and he was known for doing things the right way.
Outside of work, Joey enjoyed a full and active life. He was a member of the Wittenberg Sportsman’s Club and found great joy in hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time in the woods and the great outdoors of the Catskill Mountains. He had a green thumb and took pride in his flower and vegetable gardens, as well as in landscaping. He also enjoyed a good game of billiards and was a fan of the band Def Leppard, along with a hybrid style of country music. He was an avid fan of the San Francisco 49’ers, and he followed them with enthusiasm through the years. Joey was also known to have a stubborn side, a trait that often reflected his determination and strong will.
Family was central to Joey’s life. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Irene Sjursen Tabler Sr. He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis Canazzi Tabler, his son Bo, and Bo’s life partner, Brittney Borgen of Saugerties; his daughter, Kaitlyn Shultis; his bonus daughter, Amanda and her husband Peter Ingham; and his cherished grandchildren, Natalie, Jesse, and Jaxson. He also leaves behind his sisters, Vicky Tabler Cross and her husband Bob, Debra Gremer, and Betty Rivera. Joey was deeply loved by his four-legged furry friends, Panda, Bandit, Puma, and Cougar, and he was predeceased by his American Shepherd, Nitro.
Joey will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his love of the outdoors, his devotion to family, and the many ways he made life richer for those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday May 30, 2026 at the Santa Fe Woodstock at Hotel Dylan 1802 Rt. 28 from 1pm to 4pm..
