Obituary

West Hurley-

     Marie S. Sanford, 99, of W. Hurley died Sunday Jan. 30, 2022 at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine.  She was born March 10, 1922 in Windham, daughter of the late Byron and Dora Holcomb Smith.  A life time area resident, Marie had a strong sense of community.  She did volunteer work for the West Hurley Library, American Cancer Society, United Methodists' Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had been a board member of the Ulster Dog Training Club since 1959, was secretary, vice president, president for 10 years, and Club Registrar for 35 years.  Marie helped start the Mohawk-Hudson Shepherd Club in Albany and has been chosen to receive competition awards.  She valued the lasting friendships that she made with the Club.  Marie was a retired Dental Assistant in Kingston.

     Surviving are her niece Nancy (Bob) Hagopian of Kingston, and grand nephew Jared (Alyson) Port of CT. and many nieces and nephews also survive.  She was predeceased by her husband Carl in 2017, and siblings: Billy, Albert, Thomas, Robert, Carl Smith, Vivian Ballou, and Marjorie Gossoo.

     A Memorial Gathering will be on Saturday Feb. 5 from 1pm to 3pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia.  A Memorial Service will be at 3pm at the Funeral Home.  Spring burial in the family plot at the Westkill Cemetery.  The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Ulster Co.
