Mary Jean Gilligan, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, at the age of 83 in Kingston. Born on April 11, 1942, in Manhattan, Mary Jean's life was a tapestry of love, service, and creativity that touched the hearts of all who knew her. Mary Jean made her home in Bearsville. It was there that she embraced the community as the PostMaster, a role she held for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Edmund of Saugerties. Her legacy continues through her daughter, Nanette Gilligan of Hurley, and her son, Josh Gilligan of Bearsville, and sister, Lena Gossoo of Shandaken. She was predeceased by her parents Peter and Domenica DiBenzi Forlini, and sisters, Enis Johnson and Nanette Forlini.
Mary Jean's passion for the arts was evident in her love for opera. She found joy in the simple pleasure of experimenting with cooking recipes. Her two cats Fred & Luna were much loved. Her commitment to volunteering and conscientious nature made her a valued member of the community. Her travels to Italy and France, as well as throughout the US, were adventures that enriched her life. Mary Jean Gilligan's life was a journey of love, laughter, and service. Her services will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ulster County SPCA.
