Randall "Randy" Collins

Randall K. "Randy" Collins, a cherished educator, community pillar, and loving family man, passed away on January 5, 2025, at his residence in Woodstock, at the age of 70. Born on April 2, 1954, in Beech Grove, IN, Randy was the son of the late Lloyd and Joan Stevenson Collins and grew up with a passion for learning and helping others.

Randy's professional journey was marked by his unwavering commitment to education. He began his teaching career in Kansas, where his dedication to students first shone. Randy was the Principal of the Phoenicia Elementary School from 1984 to 2001.  He was beloved by the Phoenicia School Community for his genuine care and advocacy for his students. He was especially focused on the importance of education, championing programs for both developmentally disabled and gifted and talented students. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as he was honored with the prestigious National PTA Jenkins Award for his outstanding service as well as the Ulster County ARC.   He later became an administrator at Hunter College in the City University of New York System. There, he worked tirelessly, first with K thru 6 students before expanding his influence to 6 thru 12 students. His love for teaching also led him to serve as an adjunct professor at SUNY New Paltz and as an early administrator at the Davidson Day School, where he played an instrumental role in curriculum development.

Randy's life was not limited to his professional endeavors; he was very community-oriented. He served as a school bus driver, a high school sports coach, and a Scout Leader, touching many lives with his guidance and mentorship. His adventurous spirit led him to become a certified skydiving instructor, and he often enjoyed country rides through the mountains on his motorcycle. In his early years, Randy's love for music saw him playing guitar in a band, and he carried this passion throughout his life.

His commitment to service extended to his time as a volunteer fire department member in Colorado, demonstrating his willingness to always lend a helping hand. Randy also found solace in nature, whether it was fishing at the Ashokan Reservoir with his sons or enjoying a round of golf on a sunny afternoon.

Randy was predeceased by his wife, Beth Lipton Collins, in February 2023. He is survived by his two sons, Jason (Amy) of Queensbury, NY, and Shane Collins of Woodstock; three grandchildren, Hayden, Ryleigh, and Fiona; his sister, Kim Collins; his aunt, Carole Schmid, Genia (Don) Tetreault, the mother of his sons, and by his long time assistant and confidant Kate Bagnato.. Each family member will remember Randy for his unwavering support, love, and the wisdom he imparted.

Randy's legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and the joy he found in every aspect of life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his impact on the countless lives he touched will endure. We celebrate a life well-lived, full of purpose, and brimming with love. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as his presence enriched our lives.  A Memorial Service will be held mid-afternoon on Saturday Jan 11th at 2pm at the E. B.
