Raymond Gertieser

Raymond Lucien Gertieser, a cherished husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, in Margaretville. Born on August 6, 1931, in Metz, France, Raymond was a man who carried the essence of his beautiful birthplace throughout his life, embodying its culture and values.

Raymond was the beloved husband of Irene Szpiler Gertieser. Their enduring love story was a testament to commitment and partnership. Surviving in addition to his wife are their son Pascal of Shandaken and daughter Rachael Chagot of Florida, his sister Titine Leone of Italy. His legacy continues through his two grandchildren, Montanna and Gage, who will remember their grandfather with deep fondness and admiration.

Predeceased by his parents, Lucien and Marie Becker Gertieser, Raymond was a man who honored his heritage and the lessons passed down. His early years in France were marked by service, as he proudly completed a tour of duty, contributing to his country with the same dedication that would later define his personal and professional life.

An area resident since 1972, Raymond was known for his profound appreciation for the natural world. As a professional groundskeeper, he tended to the beauty of the earth with a gentle and skilled hand. His love for gardening was evident in the vibrant flowers and bountiful vegetables that graced his property. Raymond's past as a skilled angler spoke to his patience and respect for the environment, though in later years, he found contentment in the simpler pleasures of life.

Travel was another of Raymond's passions, and his adventures took him to Europe, Canada, and the United States. Each journey enriched his understanding and appreciation of different cultures and landscapes. At home, Raymond was an avid reader, always eager to immerse himself in new stories and ideas. His favorite color, blue, reflected the depth and calmness of his character.

Known for his ability to fix almost anything, Raymond's handy skills were a source of pride and practicality. Friends and family often marveled at his knack for solving problems with a quiet confidence and steady hand.

Above all, Raymond Gertieser is to be remembered as a peaceful man. His presence was a sanctuary of tranquility, and his demeanor a constant reminder of the power of a gentle spirit. His life was a tapestry woven with the threads of love, hard work, and serenity.

His funeral service will be Friday at 12 noon at the E. B.
