Phoenicia-
Ruth Houska, 91, of Phoenicia died peacefully at home Sunday September 3, 2023, with her son there for her each step of the way. She was born April 5, 1932 In Passaic, NJ daughter of the late John and Julia Hallock Bromm. For many years, she had been a bookkeeper in New York City. An area resident for over fifty years, Ruth had a strong sense of community. She demonstrated this through her volunteer activities. Ruth was the face of the Formerly Yours Thrift Shoppe at the Phoenicia United Methodist Church for more than thirty years. In a quiet and unassuming way, she made sure that she did more than her part in meeting the basics of those who needed help. The Thrift Shoppe has made major contributions to the community. Additionally, Ruth had been an active volunteer with the Shandaken Theatrical Society. She directed the inaugural production of The Sound of Music, and played the role of Maria VonTrapp beside Chet Gaede as Captain, as well as having served as the Theatre's President for 4 years. The community's tapestry was enriched by Ruth Houska.
Surviving are her son Douglas (Kim) Houska of Phoenicia, daughter :Julie Houska of Bearsville, granddaughter Helen Hoffman, great grandchildren: JD Schiskey, Roewyn, Quillan, and Faye Hoffman. She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 2002, and son Stephen in 2011.
A service to celebrate the life of Ruth will be held privately. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Phoenicia Thrift Shoppe or the Phoenicia Playhouse. You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence on Ruth's Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com
