Halcott Center-
Stephen George Catsos, 71, of Halcott died unexpectedly Friday, September 29, 2023 at the Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston. He was born March 18, 1952 in Paterson, NJ, son of the late George and Helen Catsos. A champion fencer in high school, he was recruited by the Naval Academy, and served two years in the US Navy. He was honorably discharged with National Defense Service and Navy Expert Rifle medals, and completed his college education at SUNY Oswego, where he met his wife of 45 years, JoAnn Kelly Catsos. They settled in the Berkshires, MA, renovating their house and raising their family, before relocating to the Catskills, NY last December to a home they designed and built themselves. His passions included cycling, fly fishing, skiing, and craft beer, and he was a true jack of all trades: fine woodworker, craftsman, beekeeper, and material producer for JoAnn’s basketry business; a resource and friend to many. He was active with the Sheffield Boy Scouts Troop 28, coached his daughters’ undefeated softball team, and obtained his Level 2 certification from the Professional Ski Instructors of America. He worked as an Industrial Arts teacher for Housatonic Valley and Monument Mountain High Schools, ski instructor at Jiminy Peak and Butternut, Ski School Director at Catamount, and self-employed building contractor until his death.
Steve will be remembered in the objects he created and for his dry sense of humor, vast wealth of knowledge, and ability to fix seemingly anything. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Kelly Catsos, three children and their partners: Christopher Catsos and Laura Vincent, Ashleigh Catsos and Kyle Yager, Jenna Catsos and Tom Wheeler; and grandchild, Arlo Yager. Survivors also include his sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Robert Roehrich of Colorado Springs, CO and their children Sarah and Robb; his sister Loretta Catsos of Glen Burnie, MD; his brother and sister-in-law Paul and Patsy Catsos of New London, NH and their children Christy, Mike and Laura.
A celebration of life will be held October 15th, from 1-3pm, at Big Elm Brewery in Sheffield, MA. Arrive on time to share stories, and raise a glass for Steve.
