Thomas C. O'Brien, known to all as Tom, passed away on July 7, 2026, in Kingston, at the age of 88. Born on April 1, 1938, Tom was adopted as a newborn by May and Charles O’Brien. He grew up in White River Junction, Vermont, where he developed the lifelong passions that would shape his personality: books, music, movies, cooking, and gardening. Tom spent countless hours playing with friends on Hillcrest Terrace, a neighborhood that gave him adventure and community, and singing soprano in the church choir. After graduating from Hartford High School, Tom spent the summer working at a drive in restaurant where his carhop coworkers introduced him to smoking. At the end of that summer, Tom made a bold move to New York City, with only $50 in his pocket, to pursue a career in acting. Thus began a chapter of his life that would later inspire the wild, captivating tales he shared with his nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful uncle, adored by the children in his life who hung on every word when he visited and brought the magic of the big city into their world.

After moving to New York City, Tom quickly discovered that he was more at home behind the scenes than on stage or in front of the camera. This led him to build a career supporting the creative work of others. A highlight of his professional life was managing The Village Gate, the legendary jazz club in Greenwich Village. His years there brought him into contact with many remarkable people, musicians, singers, and actors, some who became lifelong friends. Through his talented management of The Gate, Tom contributed to the music, culture, and energy of a truly special place and time.

Tom continued to support artists after his career in the East Village as caregiver to Philip Miller, Head Music Librarian for the New York Public Library, and later for Alf Evers of Woodstock, renowned Historian of the Catskills. In his loving care, Phil and Alf lived joyful, dignified lives well into their 90s. Through all of his work, Tom’s respect for the full humanity of those he served made a meaningful difference in their lives.

Tom was also a talented cook. He took pride in preparing food with care , and h is meals were an expression of his generosity and good taste. He understood how food could be a source of connection and comfort , and he brought that understanding into his daily life. Tom also enjoyed the company of cats, whose presence brought him comfort and companionship. It was often said that he himself had nine lives, a fitting reflection of the many medical challenges he faced and the determination to overcome them. Through it all, he showed perseverance and an enduring will to live. Even as his body grew weak, his mind remained active and alert. He was an ardent reader, with over fifty magazine subscriptions, and skilled gardener of flowers and vegetables. He took deep satisfaction in tending to living things and watching them grow. He also had a keen interest in politics and was always working to stay informed of current events. He valued knowledge, conversation, and the exchange of ideas, and he remained engaged with the world around him. 

Tom will be remembered as a man of intelligence, uncommon endurance, and a beloved friend. He lived with purpose, met hardship with courage, and found joy in the simple things of life. His legacy lives on in the memories of those who knew him, in the history of the places he helped shape, and in the example he set through a life lived with art, grace, and determination.

Tom will be greatly missed by his surviving family: Stephen and Lee Jordan of Fort Pierce, Florida; Michele Sokolis of Springfield, Illinois; Elizabeth Jordan of Chapel Hill, NC; Jon and Virginia Jordan of Poultney, VT., and his friends, especially Louise Guglielmetti, Doris Morehouse, Paul Serrato, Pete Forbis, and the Infante family.
