Highland-
Walter Rider, a cherished brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2024, at the age of 73 in Highland. Born on July 21, 1950, in Kingston, Walter was the son of the late Ernest and Emma Buhrer Rider, and he grew up surrounded by the love and camaraderie of his siblings.
His sisters, Geraldine Rider of Stone Ridge, Pauline Rider Sammons of Woodstock, and Ernestine Smith of Kingston, will fondly remember his kind spirit and gentle guidance. He was predeceased by his brothers, Reginald and Vernum Rider, and his sister, MaryAnn Rider.
Walter's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He found solace in the simplicity of nature, whether he was hunting in the woods or fishing in the serene waters that surrounded his hometown. Family was the cornerstone of Walter's life. He cherished the time spent with loved ones. He cared deeply for his friends in the special needs community, and they will remember him as a man of great integrity and warmth. Walter enjoyed the many photographs in National Geographic Magazine, which allowed him to embark on visual journeys to the farthest corners of the earth. Walter also had a unique fascination with the weather, keeping current with the daily forecasts in the Daily Freeman. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him to embrace the beauty of the natural world, to care deeply for family and friends, and to live each day with kindness and generosity. Walter's gentle soul has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many, and he will be remembered with affection and gratitude.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Walter will be held on Thursday at 12 noon at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia with the Rev. Ralph Merante officiating. Burial in the family plot at the Shandaken Rural Cemetery. Friends will be received on Thursday prior to the service from 11am to 12 noon at the Funeral Home.
