Richard Skala Obituary

Richard K. Skala, known affectionately as Rich to his friends and family, passed away on April 5, 2024, at the age of 64, in Bovina Center. Born on October 12, 1959, in Islip, Long Island, Rich was a man of integrity, courage, and unwavering spirit.
Rich's early years were spent in the town of his birth, where he was raised by his loving parents, Frank and Constance Combs Skala, who predeceased him. He was the cherished brother to Kathleen Baiata, Frank Jr., Roland, Thomas, and Kenneth. His family grew to include his two sons, Robert (Crystal) Skala of Arkville and Richard K. Skala Jr. of Florida, and his adored granddaughter, Gianna. Rich's legacy continues through his family, including several nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

Rich's commitment to his country was evident when he honorably served in the United States Navy from 1978 to 1981. During his service, he was stationed aboard the USS Dyess and the USS Miller, experiences that shaped his character and instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that lasted a lifetime.

After his military service, Rich embarked on a successful career as a Supervising Power Engineer, dedicating approximately thirty-five years to the New York State Department of Corrections at the Eastern Correctional Facility in Napanoch, NY. His work ethic and leadership were an inspiration to his colleagues, and his contributions to the facility were invaluable.

Rich's passions were as diverse as they were engaging. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, finding joy and excitement in every game. His love for the outdoors was evident in his skilled hunting and his enjoyment of camping. Rich's adventurous spirit shone through in his enthusiasm for motorcycle riding, where he owned, maintained, and rode Yamaha and Honda bikes, relishing the freedom of cruising the backroads. Winter brought out his love for snowmobile riding, and he took pleasure in watching NASCAR events, sharing these moments with family and friends.

Above all, Rich was a family man. His happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his loved ones, whether it was at a family gathering, a sporting event, or simply enjoying nature's beauty. Rich's life was a testament to the values he held dear: loyalty, perseverance, and the importance of family. His impact on those who knew him was profound, and his memory will be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends. We celebrate the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of love, service, and the simple pleasures of life. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.

A gathering to celebrate the life of Richard Skala will be held this Summer.  Arrangements are under the direction of the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia.  You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence with the family on Rich's Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com
